Why We Created Our Homeschool Geography Curriculum: The Story Behind Global Explorers

As a parent, I spend a lot of time thinking about what really matters in our days: the lessons, the values, the moments I hope will stick in my children’s memories.

When we first began homeschooling, I asked myself a few simple but powerful questions:

  • What do I want my children to remember most about their time at home?
  • What kind of learning do I want to bring into our home?
  • What educational approach will help them grow into the kind of humans I hope they’ll become?

I sat down and made a list of what I hoped our days would look like and what I truly wanted my children to learn. Inspired by both Maria Montessori and Charlotte Mason, that list became the foundation of what would later grow into the Global Explorers Club.

A Curriculum Rooted in Values

I wanted my children to have the freedom to explore the world around them, to discover the connections between people and places, to fall in love with literature, and to build real-life skills that would help them grow into thoughtful, curious, and compassionate humans.

I didn’t want their education to be about checking boxes. I wanted it to be filled with stories, hands-on experiences, and the freedom to follow their curiosity and interests. I wanted them to see the beauty and diversity of the world and to develop a deep sense of connection, respect, and global awareness.

That vision became the heart of Global Explorers: a family-style geography and culture curriculum rooted in storytelling, real-world learning, and the belief that education should be meaningful, inclusive, and full of connection.

Our Guiding Values

From day one, these values have shaped every lesson and activity:

  • I believe in giving my children the freedom to explore by encouraging their natural curiosity and offering them a rich feast of ideas, stories, and experiences.
  • I want to nurture a love of learning through literature, folk tales, and creative, hands-on work.
  • I hope to cultivate an understanding of our shared humanity by highlighting the fundamental needs that connect us all.
  • I want to instill reverence for life and the natural world, and raise kind, responsible citizens of the Earth.
  • I embrace inclusivity and diversity by introducing my children to the wide variety of people, traditions, and ways of living around the globe.
  • I value real-world learning (e.g. cooking, crafting, playing games, etc.) and believe these hands-on experiences are what make learning truly meaningful.
  • Most of all, I believe in family-style learning. It isn’t always easy, but the connection, joy, and memories we build together make every moment worthwhile.
