Venezuela Unit Study
Hey there, fellow adventurers! Here’s a quick look at our “Around the World” journey as we begin exploring South America. We started our expedition with a (virtual) visit to the vibrant land of Venezuela!

Our Learning Journal
Day 1
- Introduced our new virtue, Creativity, plus completed our other morning basket activities
- Read The Incredible Yet True Adventures of Alexander von Humboldt, Ch. 1
- Completed the map study detailed in the Global Explorers’ Alexander von Humboldt book discussion guide
- Watched Magic Andes: Venezuela and Colombia
Day 2
- Morning basket, including our virtue discussion
- Read Journey to the Last River, pg. 1-9, which included the following: Every Adventure Has a New Beginning, the March 13th and 14th journal entries, and the Travel Kit Checklist and Inventory
- South America map study, specifically the location of Venezuela in relation to the Caribbean
- Making Words
- Listened and discussed Circle Round’s “The Owner of the Sun” folk tale, worked on The Writing Revolution sentence strategies, and completed journal entries
Day 3
- Completed our morning basket activities, including our virtue discussion, South America map drill, and “Making Words” activity
- Read The Incredible Yet True Adventures of Alexander von Humboldt, pg. 10-15
- Worked on The Writing Revolution sentence strategies for The Incredible Yet True Adventures of Alexander von Humboldt
- Read the Venezuela entries in the Children’s Illustrated Atlas and The Flag Book
Day 4
- Read Dancing Hands: How Teresa Carreño Played the Piano for President Lincoln
- Listened to Teresa Carreño’s musical performances
- Map work related to Teresa Carreño’s life
- Discussed the “Venezuela” entry in Countries of the World: Our World in Pictures
- Started Venezuela’s Wonder Wall sheet to encourage independent research
- Completed virtue affirmation copywork and journal entry
- Completed the Venezuela boarding pass
- Worked on our Alexander von Humboldt geography notebooking project
Day 5
- Completed our morning basket activities, including our virtue affirmation and Making Words activity
- Read about Venezuela in The Quilt of Belonging
- Explored the Venezuela resources with Mama Lisa’s World
- Worked on The Writing Revolution sentence strategies for both Venezuela and The Incredible Yet True Adventures of Alexander von Humboldt

Day 6

- Explored Cumaná, Venezuela with Google Earth
- Learned more about Angel Falls
Day 7
- Completed our morning basket activities, including our virtue affirmation, Making Words, and South America map drill
