Learn how to play Shisima, a traditional three-in-a-row strategy game played in Kenya and other parts of East Africa.

Prep work

• [ ] Print the Shisima game board found in the Global Explorers documents.
• [ ] Gather 6 pebbles, buttons, or coins (3 of one color and 3 of another) for the playing pieces (imbalavali or “water bugs”).
• [ ] [Optional] Read about Shisima in Math Games and Activities from Around the World, pg. 4–5.

Lesson

• Explain that Shisima is similar to Tic-Tac-Toe but played on a different board shape.
• Use the online tutorial found [HERE] to set up your game board and learn how to play.
• Practice playing Shisima together, testing different strategies to see how the game changes.
• Discuss: Why is the center space important? How can you block your opponent? What strategies seem most effective?
