Making Words

Begin by printing the Making Words sheet for Kenya below, then follow the activity instructions.

Activity

Complete the Making Words activity included with your country study to practice spelling and phonemic awareness.

Supplies & Materials

  • Making Words sheet
  • Letter tiles (or use movable alphabet letters)
  • Pencil and paper (optional)

Lesson

  • Provide students with the set of letters needed.
  • Read each prompt aloud, telling students how many letters the word contains.
  • Students will build each word by adding, moving, or rearranging letters.
  • After each word is made:
    • Check spelling together.
    • Use the word in a sentence.
    • Continue until students build the final puzzle word.
  • Encourage students to:
    • Say the word aloud as they build it.
    • Notice spelling patterns, blends, digraphs, prefixes, or suffixes.
    • Rearrange letters carefully before asking for help.
  • Keep the lesson short, no more than 10–15 minutes.

Learning Extensions

  • Record each word in a notebook.
  • Sort words by spelling pattern.
  • Find rhyming words.
  • Identify prefixes or suffixes.
  • Write a sentence using 2–3 of the words.
  • Create additional words using the same letter set.
